New beds for fall planting - 2023 08 27

The seeds I germinated in July did not produce plants. I planted them after they had sprouted and they did not grow after that. This is due to (at least) three issues:

  1. Lack of knowledge for preparing the soil bed
  2. Lack of knowledge for planting seeds
  3. Lack of knowledge for watering new seeds
To address these three issues I have taken the following steps:
  1. Download the Gardner's Bible (The Vegetable Gardener's Bible, 2nd Edition: Discover Ed's High-Yield W-O-R-D System for All North American Gardening Regions: Wide Rows, Organic Methods, Raised Beds, Deep Soil) to my Kindle and get Mom to read it out loud to me while I am working in the kitchen;
    1. Set up new garden beds for new seed plantings
      1. Layer 1 - recycle cardboard to set up barrier between tree roots and new garden soil
      2. Layer 2 - thick layer of existing, non-productive garden soil
      3. Layer 3 - lime dressing to balance existing soil ph
      4. Layer 4 - alfalfa pellets to add nitrogen and mulch to the soil
      5. Layer 5 - potting soil to provide immediate nutrients for new seeds
      6. Layer 6 - sprinkle of bokashi bran to add micro-organism culture to the soil
      7. Layer 7 - water with worm water to add live micro-organisms to the the soil
  2. Consult with my knowledgeable garden neighbour
    1. Read from the Garden Bible on how to plant seeds
      1. Follow instructions for planting
  3. Consult with my knowledgeable garden neighbour
    1. Read from the Garden Bible about watering new seeds
      1. Follow instructions for watering
I am going to plant salad mix, radishes, kale and chard. Here's hoping this time I can get things to grow.
